Group Sittings

Guidelines

Group sittings are valuable opportunities to strengthen your practice of Vipassana. By sitting with fellow students who are following the same technique, you can meditate more seriously and gain support which will help you keep practicing on your own.

The following guidelines have been established to ensure that group sittings will be most beneficial to the students attending them.

  • Group sittings are open only to those who have taken at least one ten-day course with S. N. Goenka or one of his assistant teachers.
  • The five precepts of wholesome conduct are to be observed in the place where group sittings are held. These precepts include abstention from the following: killing any living creature, stealing, wrong speech, sexual misconduct, and the use of intoxicating drugs or alcohol. Observation of wholesome conduct is a necessary foundation for the practice of Vipassana.
  • Participants at group sittings should practice only the meditation technique taught by S. N. Goenka.
  • Refer to the following outline for continued success in meditation: Practice Guidelines*.

May group sittings help your practice of Dhamma.

Introduction

Use this page to send emails to Dhamma Siri management and committees or sign up to receive emails about Dhamma Siri and local area activities. Activities include local group sittings, the trust meetings, service days at Dhamma Siri, short old student courses and the various committees that run the center and organize courses.

Email postings on all lists are “moderated” before being published to the entire group. This helps prevent unsolicited emails and also ensures the relevance and appropriateness of the content for distribution to all.

We welcome the opportunity to help meditators stay in contact with the Center and with the Dhamma. We hope that all old students will take advantage of these.

May all of us continue to grow in Dhamma.

SVA Trust

Trust Meetings

The Southwest Vipassana Association (SVA) Trust meetings are held each month at Dhamma Siri on each Sunday on which a 10-day course ends, from 10:00 a.m. to approximately 12:00 noon. They are preceded by a group sitting from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m, and it is recommended that those attending the meeting sit prior. All old students are welcome to attend.

Perhaps you’d like to listen to committee reports, find out who’s who for various projects, give suggestions, or volunteer for an activity. Attending a trust meeting is an excellent way to find out how Dhamma Siri really runs.

The minutes of many of the past trust meetings are available below:

The Center

In June 2006 the Center completed construction of the new pagoda. This 2 story pagoda has 94 individual meditation cells, with an initial array of 3 concentric rings containing 63 cells on the ground floor and 2 concentric rings with 31 cells on the upper floor. More rings of cells can be added according to future needs. The pagoda enables the Centre to offer long courses of 30 and 45 days and allows old student to grow more deeply in their experience of Dhamma.

Dhamma Siri continues to develop in accordance with its master plan toward the goal of being an ideal meditation center. The next major development project will be to expand the men’s residence to provide additional private rooms equal in number to the women’s residence.
